Maine Taxpayers United
Our Mission:
Reduce our state and local tax burden and promote prudent government spending.
Our Motivation:
As citizens of the State of Maine we recognize that we have been over-taxed at every level of government for many years.
‘The power to tax is the power to destroy.”
The Free Enterprise system creates wealth, creates jobs and stimulates the economy. An inefficient government destroys all of these. Compared to the other fifty states, our tax burden has been at or near the top, while our per capita income is among the lowest. This lamentable situation is a result of profligate spending and irresponsible management at the state level.
For our young citizens Maine is no longer a place for opportunity, as it was for many of us in years past. Maine’s young people leave in droves for opportunities elsewhere. For too many of our elderly Maine’s oppressive tax burden creates hardship and forces homeowners out of their family homes.
Citizens of Maine will no longer tolerate this excessive tax burden. Therefore,
We resolve to act for the future of our State and for our posterity.
Our Commitment:
Advocacy: We will represent the interests of Maine taxpayers in the Legislature and in local government. We will promote and support candidates, citizen’s initiatives and legislation that support Our Mission. We are non-partisan issue-advocates who are eager to work with all who share our convictions.
Accountability: We will hold elected and appointed public officials accountable for their actions. Candidates will be evaluated on the basis of past performance and on the strength of their commitment to Our Mission.
Communications: We will communicate with all citizens through all available channels, and continue to strengthen our statewide organization in order to connect with all Maine communities and other organizations, which share our goals.
From "The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere"
"A cry of defiance and not of fear,
A voice in the darkness, a knock at the door,
And a word that shall echo forevermore!
For, borne on the night-wind of the past,
Through all our history to the last,
In the hour of darkness and peril and need,
The people will waken and listen to hear
The hurring hoof-beat of the steed,
And the midnight message of Paul Revere."
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, 1860
